Fra Intarsia Furniture til Aakjaer Furniture: En juridisk udfordring blev til en unik hyldest

From Intarsia Furniture to Aakjaer Furniture: A Legal Challenge Turned into a Unique Tribute

At the heart of Danish furniture design lies a story of heritage, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance. This legacy is now proudly carried forward as Intarsia Furniture changes its name to Aakjaer Furniture. Behind the name change is a legal challenge that has now been transformed into an opportunity to strengthen the company’s identity.

The company was originally founded in November 2022 under the name Intarsia Furniture by third-generation Nanna Aakjær Svendsen, who revived her grandfather Jørgen Aakjær Jørgensen’s iconic furniture designs from the 1950s. During the trademark registration process, an unexpected challenge arose when a Portuguese furniture manufacturer named Intarsi filed an objection to the registration. Although the difference in names was minor, it held legal significance.

“What initially seemed like a major obstacle has now become an opportunity to honor our family’s story and my grandfather,” says Nanna Aakjær Svendsen. “The new name, Aakjaer Furniture, beautifully connects our past with our future. At the same time, the name change gives us the freedom to explore new design directions without being bound to the intarsia technique.”

Jørgen Aakjær Jørgensen originally founded the company Møbelintarsia in 1948 together with his wife, Lis Aakjær Jørgensen, after honing his craft in Sweden. His designs, characterized by exceptional craftsmanship and intarsia techniques, quickly became sought after both nationally and internationally.

Today, these timeless masterpieces are presented alongside Danish design icons such as Wegner and Børge Mogensen. The collection includes the iconic No.55 series, whose modular design bridges the past and present, as well as the sculptural Heart and Drops tables, showcasing intarsia at its most refined.

The rebirth of the company sparked significant interest, underscored in 2023 when Løvens Hule investors Louise Herping Ellegaard and Tahir Siddique chose to invest in the company. With this support, along with a new partnership with Your Brand Partner, Aakjaer Furniture has taken its first steps toward bringing Danish design heritage to the world, with retailers now in Hong Kong, the UK, the US, and more on the way.

All Aakjaer Furniture pieces continue to be produced in Denmark and Europe with a focus on quality. The materials used include FSC-certified wood, and each piece is crafted with the same care and precision as in the 1950s.

With 30 retailers in Denmark and growing international interest, Aakjaer Furniture proves that great design is timeless—and that Danish craftsmanship still holds a central place in modern interiors.

The Aakjaer name thus becomes a unifying brand, embracing both Jørgen Aakjær’s historic designs and Nanna Aakjær Svendsen’s new and upcoming furniture collections.
