From Intarsia to Aakjaer
From Intarsia Furniture to Aakjaer Furniture: A Legal Challenge Turned into a Unique Tribute
At the heart of Danish furniture design lies a story of heritage, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance. This legacy is now proudly carried forward as Intarsia Furniture changes its name to Aakjaer Furniture. Behind the name change is a legal challenge that has been transformed into an opportunity to strengthen the company’s identity.

A New Name Honoring a Legacy
The company was originally founded in November 2022 under the name Intarsia Furniture by third-generation designer Nanna Aakjær Svendsen, who set out to revive her grandfather Jørgen Aakjær Jørgensen’s iconic mid-century furniture designs from the 1950s. As part of the trademark registration process, an unexpected challenge emerged when a Portuguese furniture manufacturer, Intarsi, filed an objection. Although the difference in names was minimal, it carried substantial legal implications.
“What initially seemed like a major obstacle has now become an opportunity to honor our family’s story and my grandfather,” says Nanna Aakjær Svendsen. “The new name, Aakjaer Furniture, beautifully connects our past with our future. At the same time, the name change gives us the freedom to explore new design directions without being confined to the intarsia technique.”

Since 1948
Jørgen Aakjær Jørgensen originally founded the company Møbelintarsia in 1948 together with his wife, Lis Aakjær Jørgensen, after perfecting his craftsmanship in Sweden. His designs, characterized by exceptional woodworking and intricate intarsia techniques, quickly gained recognition both nationally and internationally.
Today, these timeless pieces are presented alongside Danish furniture icons such as Hans J. Wegner and Børge Mogensen. The collection features the iconic No.55 series, whose modular design seamlessly bridges past and present, along with the sculptural Heart and Drops tables, which showcase the intarsia technique at its most refined.

Timeless Design – From Local Heritage to Global Appeal
The company’s rebirth generated significant attention, which was further amplified in 2024 when Løvens Hule(Denmark’s version of Dragons’ Den) investors Louise Herping Ellegaard and Tahir Siddique chose to invest in Aakjaer Furniture. With their backing—and a new partnership with Your Brand Partner—Aakjaer Furniture has taken its first major steps toward bringing Danish design heritage to a global audience. The brand is now represented by retailers in Hong Kong, the UK, the US, and more markets are on the horizon.
All Aakjaer Furniture pieces continue to be produced in Denmark and across Europe, with an unwavering focus on quality and traditional craftsmanship. The materials include FSC-certified wood, and every piece is crafted with the same precision and care as in the 1950s.
With 30 retailers in Denmark and growing international demand, Aakjaer Furniture is proving that great design is truly timeless - and that Danish furniture craftsmanship continues to hold a central place in contemporary interiors.
Today, the Aakjaer name stands as a unifying brand, embracing both the historic designs of Jørgen Aakjær and the new, forward-looking collections by Nanna Aakjær Svendsen.
