Our story

It all began long before 1948.

On 18 May 1920, in the small northern Jutland town of Fjerritslev, a skilled carpenter was born: Jørgen Aakjær Jørgensen. True to family tradition, Jørgen followed in his father's footsteps and began his apprenticeship under him. He later earned his diploma from the Danish Technological Institute, where he was recognized for his outstanding work.

Jørgen was a dedicated and hard-working craftsman, with a natural talent for creating beautiful, high-quality furniture. As his passion for traditional woodworking techniques deepened, he quickly outgrew the teachings of his father. Eager to refine his skills, Jørgen traveled to Sweden, where he specialized in the rare and ancient craft of Intarsia - a decorative woodworking technique that would later become a hallmark of his design legacy.

Møbelintarsia: A Story of Quality and Tradition

In 1948, Jørgen Aakjær Jørgensen and his family relocated from Fjerritslev to Bramming in Southwest Jutland. There, Jørgen began producing tables in his parents’ basement on Hellesvej. What started as a modest workshop quickly grew into a thriving business, and just four years later, Jørgen and his wife, Lis Aakjær Jørgensen, moved the operation to larger facilities with an adjoining farmhouse on Nørregade. It was here that the couple’s four children were born.

Møbelintarsia evolved into a fast-growing, family-run furniture business where all the children contributed. At its peak, the factory employed more than 15 skilled craftsmen, producing handcrafted furniture rooted in Danish design and the Intarsia tradition.

In 1982, Jørgen Aakjær Jørgensen made the decision to close the factory and enjoy a well-deserved retirement with his family and grandchildren. He passed away in December 2007, and with him, Møbelintarsia became a closed chapter in our family’s history.

That skilled and passionate cabinetmaker was my beloved grandfather.

The classic furniture brought back to life again

The years passed, and I grew up. On New Year’s Eve in 2017, during a walk with my boyfriend through the Swedish wilderness, it suddenly became clear to me: my grandfather’s iconic furniture designs were simply too unique to be forgotten.

With the full support and enthusiasm of my family, I made the decision to revive a selection of Møbelintarsia’s original designs under the name Intarsia Furniture. Since then, the journey has become a meaningful and exciting adventure for all of us.

It is with great pride that I now carry forward the life’s work of my grandfather, Jørgen Aakjær Jørgensen - work that has also become my own. The journey has been challenging, yet deeply rewarding and educational. Recreating his classic furniture designs has not been easy, especially since my grandfather left behind no technical drawings. To faithfully restore the pieces, I had to track down and purchase original furniture that was no longer in the family’s possession.

“Jørgen Aakjær Jørgensen was a traditional craftsman who translated his ideas directly into form, with unwavering focus on craftsmanship and execution.”

The furnitures in focus…

“Jørgen Aakjær Jørgensen’s design DNA is reflected in the subtle details, his mastery of the intarsia technique, and the seamless fusion of simplicity and functionality within the modern Danish design tradition.”

I know how detail-oriented and quality-conscious Jørgen Aakjær Jørgensen was, and that legacy places a great responsibility on my shoulders. Today, every piece of furniture is created with passion and the highest level of craftsmanship, guided by humility and deep respect for the original designs.

That said, it is also with great pride that we now present his designs through carefully selected Danish furniture retailers. I know my grandfather would be proud—not only of how we’ve recreated his furniture, but of the entire universe we’ve built around Intarsia Furniture.

With his design DNA as a constant source of inspiration, we continue to nurture our passion and strive to create new, beautiful furniture designs rooted in the same values.

The only part of my grandfather I’ve chosen not to include in Intarsia Furniture is his modesty. Jørgen Aakjær Jørgensen’s name and story deserve to be shared - and I intend to make sure they are.
